Revised Power Point Presentation Template for Jacksonville Code Camp 2007

Here is the revised power point template (still for Office 2003) from last year.

We hope that this will help the new speakers to follow a standard pattern. One important thing to note from the template is that we will be using CodecampEvals.com for session evaluations. Even if you decide not to use this template, please make sure that your presentation slides contain the important pieces of information.

Show your coolest code – 7 minutes to code fame

Have you written a piece of code that was few lines but accomplished something very cool? If you have something useful and creative to show and you think that’s the coolest piece of code you have written, you may be up for 7 minutes of code fame. Come and show your code – there are great prizes to win. Let your code speak and be famous!

Rules

-         Code has to be in either C# or VB.NET. No other languages are considered.
-         The code has to be written by you.
-         If you have adapted the code from somewhere, you have to cite the resource.
-         You will be given 7 minutes to show the code.
-         You cannot use any slides.
-         It is recommended (not mandatory) to keep the number of lines of code to 30.
-         Maximum of 6 participants would be chosen to demonstrate.
-         All the code pieces will be acknowledged on Jacksonville Code camp web site.
-         The deadline to submit your entry is August 24^th, 2007.

Judging Criteria

The “Cool Index” of code would be computed based on the following factors (not in any order of importance).

-         Purpose of Code
-         Usefulness
-         Creativity
-         Number of Lines
-         Presentation
-         Wow Factor

Additional Rules and Information
- Each contestant gets maximum of 7 minutes to show the code.
- Code has to be in either C# or VB.NET.
- We will have a person who will indicate time at 5 min and 6 min interval.
- If the contestant over runs the time, 1 point will be deducted for every second from the final score.
- The contestant’s entry is evaluated based on the criteria as below.
- There will be a panel of 2-3 judges. The judges will be introduced before the session.
- The decision of judges will be final and binding.

Judging Criteria Guide
- Is the purpose Clear, concise, and defined? What problem does this code solve?
- How useful is the code? Does it provide a custom solution to the problem or a standard one?
- What is the extent of creativity?
- Is the code presented in an organized, confident way?
- How many lines of Code? The fewer the better. Recommended limit is 30 LOC.
- Is the code style proper? Is the code documented?
- How did you feel the first time you heard about the solution? Quantify it on point scale.
- Why coolest? The contestant has 1 minute to answer why this is the coolest piece of code for the problem.
- The judges can ask a technical question to the contestant. The points are awarded based on the correctness of response. The contestant has 1 minute to answer the question.

Prizes

-         The first 3 coolest pieces of code as determined by judges would be awarded.
-         We will also present an audience award for coolest code.
-         Each audience member will have a card to mark the coolest piece of code.
-         The audience members present will also have a chance to win a prize.
-     Every participant's entry gets 3000 Community Credit points. The winner gets 10000 Community Credit Points.

Contest Prizes still to be decided. However, they would be better than last year's contest prizes.

How to submit your entry?

Send your topic, code description, and any other useful information along with your contact information to me at vinay_a at [hotmail] dot [com]. I'll let you know, if your entry is accepted or not.

Be present on August 25^th in coolest code session at 1:50 PM to demonstrate your code.

We have been able to procure an extremely discounted rate of $79 per night ($10 less than last year) at Omni Hotel, Jacksonville. Please note that this rate does not include parking. Cost of Self Parking is $10/day and Hotel parking is $14/day. This rate is applicable for Friday, August 24th and Saturday, August 25th only.

Code Camp is on August 25th, 2007. Though, this is a free event we have several costs to organize this event. We look forward to the support of local businesses and corporations to cover these costs.

Call for Speakers - Jacksonville Code Camp - Speaker Session Form

We are accepting speaker sessions for Jacksonville Code Camp to be held on Saturday, August 25^th, 2007. This is a general call for speakers. If you want to speak and make your mark in the community, this is a great chance.

We have four different types of talks – i) Code focused presentation (70 min) ii) Chalk talk (70 min) iii) Developing the developer (30 min) iv) Bootcamp (30 min or 70 min). You can find detailed descriptions in the attached session submission form.

The first two kinds have been around for a while. Let me explain briefly the new tracks. “Developing the developer “ talks will focus on career and inter-personal skill development. Bootcamp focuses on beginner (101 style) talks - 30 minutes or 70 minutes.

If you are submitting multiple sessions, please indicate the priority in which you would like your sessions to be considered in your email. We would post the selected sessions on Jacksonville Code Camp Web Site.

Please use the attached session form for your submission, as this is slightly different from previous forms. Send your filled forms at codecamp-speakers@jaxdug.com. Please hurry your submission as the speaker slots are going to fill fast.

We'll be opening the call for speakers in the next couple of days. You might be wondering why is the call for speakers not open yet. The reason for delay is that this time we are going to automate the process of session submission. We are working on some web forms and our new code camp web site.

Jacksonville Code Camp - August 25th, 2007 - Registration Open

Jacksonville Code Camp 2007 will be on August 25th, 2007. We have opened the registration for the event. We are holding the event at Advanced Technology Center, Florida Community College.

Jacksonville Code Camp 2007 promises to be one of the most innovative and diverse code camps in Florida. We'll have a full day of sessions (9 tracks, more than 50 sessions) from Microsoft Employees, Microsoft MVPs, National, Regional, and Local Speakers. The topics will range from Visual Studio 2008, Silverlight, Linq, WPF, WCF, WWF, MS SQL Server, Katamai, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, Expression Web, Sharepoint, MOSS, OBA, Architecture, Web Services, Biztalk, Process, Scrum, etc. You name a buzzword and you're sure to see at least one session on that. There will be primarily three types of talks - Presentation/Code Focussed, Chalk Talks, and Developing the Developer (Business/Soft Skills).
