September 5th - JaxDUG - A Microsoft-Enabled Start to Multi-threading - Thomas Bates

Where: "Sea Oats" room (2nd floor) in Building 500, Bank of America, 9000 Southside Blvd: Map and Directions
When: Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 @ 6-8 PM

Presentation Topics:

1. A Brief Introduction to .NET Reflector
Speaker: Jonathan Bates
This presentation will demonstrate how .NET Reflector can be used in your environment, specifically with two real world scenarios -- code base recovery and language translation.

2. Asynchronous Programming Using the ThreadPool and BackgroundWorker classes.
Speaker:  Thomas Bates
Let's dip our toes in into the waters of Asynchronous Programming!  Asyncronous programming can keep application UI's responsive or take the bite out of time-consuming operations.  This presentation will provide examples using the ThreadPool class and the BackgroundWorker class.  The ThreadPool class has not changed much since 1.1, but the BackgroundWorker class is new to the .NET 2.0 Framework.

Thank you, to all of those who came out to the presentation. I enjoyed it and I thought the discussion afterward was awesome. I just rolled in, so I will not have the code up tonight from the presentation. I will get it commented and uploaded by tomorrow evening (one way or another).

Had some problems getting the 1,1 code files to zip, post, and deliver. It was due to the .vb files in the package. There is just no love for the VB files. Oh well. The current attachment to this post has Thomas' presentation and code as well as most of my code and slides. You can download the rest of my code (the 1.1 code files) from here --> http://rapidshare.com/files/54567234/Reflector_2007.09.05.zip.html . If you decide to run the 1.1 solution, keep in mind that it is 1.1 ASP.NET so it will need a virtual directory in IIS to run. The 2.0 doesnt suffer from the limitation.

About Jonathan Bates

Jonathan Bates is involved in the local development community, once even serving time as the President of the Jacksonville Developers User Group.

He has had a long and storied path on the way to I.T. work. At one point, Jonathan had a near Neo-Luddite position about computers, believing them at worst to be the means to humanity's eventual slavery and at best tools for general evil. After landing a job powered by such advanced technologies as Windows 3.11 for Workgroups and MS Access, Jonathan began to change his opinion on computers. He began to believe that they might be for more than just improving the display and sound qualities on his Laserdisc movies. In time, he came to see that computers were nothing more than tools, not much different then a hammer (though not as good to drive nails with).

Jonathan Bates is an industry-certified and proven developer and trainer, facilitating the transfer of knowledge from conceptual client request to delivered and implemented solution. Jonathan enjoys sharing his knowledge and understanding about development principals with like-minded people. You can generally find him enjoying good company discussing his personal Unified Theory and how programming can be used to describe it. And if you can't find him, drop him a line with a time and place and he'll find you.
