October 3rd – JaxDUG – Consulting and Unit Testing Tips

Where: "Sea Oats" room (2nd floor) in Building 500, Bank of America, 9000 Southside Blvd: Map and Directions
When: Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007 @ 6-8 PM

Presentation Topics:

1. Consulting from Start to Finish at 50,000 feet.
Speaker: Corey Grusden
Has your manager or a friend asked you, "I have a problem and I need a program to solve it, how long will it take?"?  Like most of us, this type of question happens everytime we start a new project.  With so many methodologies, best practices, and techniques -- which one do I
use and how?!  By doing a high-level walk through of a recent project, Corey will touch briefly on the subjects mentioned to share with you how he handles clients on every project.  You will walk away with at least one new idea for developing an application!

2. Introduction to Unit Testing with MbUnit.
Speaker:  Andrew Connell
In this session Andrew will demonstrate the open source utility MbUnit that you can use to implement unit testing in your projects. While MbUnit is similar to other testing tools, you will see some of the subtle differences demonstrated including row testing. In addition, some general tips, tricks and techniques will be covered that will help you in adopting unit testing in your projects with MbUnit. You'll see how to automate the execution of your tests using TestDriven.net as well as other free tools.

About Jonathan Bates

Jonathan Bates is involved in the local development community, once even serving time as the President of the Jacksonville Developers User Group.

He has had a long and storied path on the way to I.T. work. At one point, Jonathan had a near Neo-Luddite position about computers, believing them at worst to be the means to humanity's eventual slavery and at best tools for general evil. After landing a job powered by such advanced technologies as Windows 3.11 for Workgroups and MS Access, Jonathan began to change his opinion on computers. He began to believe that they might be for more than just improving the display and sound qualities on his Laserdisc movies. In time, he came to see that computers were nothing more than tools, not much different then a hammer (though not as good to drive nails with).

Jonathan Bates is an industry-certified and proven developer and trainer, facilitating the transfer of knowledge from conceptual client request to delivered and implemented solution. Jonathan enjoys sharing his knowledge and understanding about development principals with like-minded people. You can generally find him enjoying good company discussing his personal Unified Theory and how programming can be used to describe it. And if you can't find him, drop him a line with a time and place and he'll find you.
